Hunter Guide

Hunters, deadly with a gun or bow, are a vicious DPS class. A well geared hunter is almost guaranteed to be in the top 3 on the DPS charts, if not the very top. Leveling a hunter can be very fun. You have a companion aiding you starting at a pretty early level, which makes handling multiple mobs much easier.

As a hunter, you start off wearing leather, and are able to wear mail armor at level 40. Hunters are able to wield pretty much all weapons (aside from wands of course).

Like every other class, hunters have three different specs to choose from. And since a hunter is a DPS specific class, each spec does a great deal of damage.

Marksmanship grants the hunter more damage using gun, bow or crossbow. While your pet does not do near as much damage as it does if you chose beast mastery, it is still a steady income of extra dps. Leveling hunter as marksmanship gives you a healing debuff that hits for a large amount of damage (Aimed Shot). Aimed shot is recommended for most that like to PvP. Even if you chose a different spec, it’s only 21 points down the tree in Marksmanship to get it. You also get an group attack power buff, and some other cool toys.

Survival is another popular spec. Most leveling hunter would not go this route, but the damage it can produce later on at higher levels is hard to resist. Explosive shots has to be one of my favorites in the hunter class, and the survivability the spec brings is fantastic in PvP.

If trying to level hunter though, there’s Beast Mastery! The spec that turns your pawing little kitten into a vicious lion! I have sent my pet after people in battlegrounds and watched him solo them on his own! Beast Mastery lowers the amount of damage that you do as a hunter, but greatly increases that of your pets.

During burning crusade, beast mastery was a very tough spec to beat. Things have changed some now in Wrath of the Lich King, but the spec still remains the dominant choice while trying to level hunter.
